Board of Education Election Will Impact You

By Nyesha McCauley

Who decided that your children will wear school uniforms? Who decided if Achievement First could operate another school in Hartford? Who will be our next Superintendent of Schools? These are questions that you probably don’t get asked on a daily basis. Your School Board makes these important decisions and many more about the quality of education in Hartford schools. And four of these members are elected by you.

With four of the Board of Education members elected by you, the voter, that puts you in the driver’s seat when it comes to the pace of change and quality of education.

This election presents an opportunity speak up and out about educational opportunities for Hartford children.

The Hartford School District has undergone major transformations since 2007. You don’t need to look any further than the newly opened Journalism and Media Academy on Tower Avenue or Global Communications on Albany Avenue. But the truth is many of Hartford’s schools are still struggling to increase student performance. The recently released CMT/CAPT scores show that Hartford remained basically flat. Why? We know there are parents, school administrators and teachers who are working really hard to increase student achievement but more support is needed.

It is because the school board makes decisions that impact the educational opportunities for students that Achieve Hartford! is involved in the upcoming Board of Education election.

Achieve Hartford! is independent of the school district and as a 501 (c) 3 non-profit we are not endorsing any candidates but rather our focus is on how the reform efforts are going and evaluating progress in Hartford schools.

We have launched a website to keep you informed on many issues including; what board members do, who’s running, and how the Board of Education can improve low performing schools.

Elections have consequences and unless you are willing to be satisfied with low performing or under performing schools, it is time to do something more than hope that things will get better. www.domorethanhope.com
