The governor announced funding today for 179 supportive housing units in five Connecticut cities, including Hartford, following approval by the state committee on supportive housing.
The units will be built in Hartford by the Chrysalis Center Inc.; in Bridgeport by the Bridgeport Neighborhood Trust, Inc.; in New Haven by Columbus House Inc.; in New London by the Connection Fund; and in Waterbury by Francis Xavier Plaza, Inc. and the city's housing authority.
Under the currrent fiscal budget, $30 million in capital funding was provided to develop supportive housing, coupled with an annualized $2.6 million for operating and support services.
Supportive housing seeks to ease homelessness by providing rental housing combined with health, employment and other services. The housing can save Connecticut money by reducing costs for emergency room visits, homeless shelter stays and dealings with the criminal justice system.
"Supportive housing is a vital component of creating stability and a strong economic base for individuals and families in need of additional support," Gov.Dannel P. Malloysaid. "These housing units give people a chance to build a life that includes family, friends, community and employment."
