What’s New on HartfordInfo.org is a periodic update announcing recent additions to HartfordInfo.org. Please feel free to forward this message to others. To be added to the distribution list send an email message through our feedback page.
HartfordInfo.org, a program of the Hartford Public Library, is a gateway to information and data on issues important to those who live and work in Hartford and the region.
Here are some of the recent additions to HartfordInfo.org:
- The HartfordInfo.org home page is now available in Spanish. Go to www.hartfordinfo.org and click on the “Espanol” link in the upper right corner. Only the home page has been translated so far but additional portions of the site will be translated in the coming months.
- The initial phase of Hartford Trends has been completed. Hartford Trends is a multi-phase project that will provide data over time for Hartford neighborhoods. The initial pilot database includes U.S. Census data from 1970, 1980, 1990, and 2000 for the Blue Hills, Northeast, and Upper Albany neighborhoods. In the coming months Hartford Trends will expand to include all of Hartford's neighborhoods. Data from sources in addition to the U.S. Census will be added. The initial database may be accessed interactively by going to www.hartfordinfo.org and clicking on the “Hartford Trends Statistical Profiles” link in the “Go Directly to Data” box in the center of the page.
- Hartford Children are Learning by Leaps and Bounds: A study of preschoolers who attended 14 child care programs in Hartford that receive funding and support from the Brighter Futures Initiative, Hartford Foundation for Public Giving. Go to www.hartfordinfo.org and type “preschool” in the white search box towards the upper left corner and then click “Search,” or click on “Families & Children” from the list of categories on the left of the home page.
- Excerpts from Safest/Most Dangerous Cities by Morgan Quitno Press: This controversial report was in the news late last year because it ranked Hartford among the most dangerous cities in the country. Go to www.hartfordinfo.org and type “morgan” in the white search box towards the upper left corner and then click “Search,” or click on “Public Safety & Crime” from the list of categories on the left of the home page.
- Pope Park Master Plan: The Master Plan was developed through a series of public meetings, user surveys, and research, and describes the history of the park and current plans for improvement. Go to www.hartfordinfo.org and type “pope” in the white search box towards the upper left corner and then click “Search,” or click on “Environment” from the list of categories on the left of the home page.
- Police Report for The City of Hartford: This report, written by former City Manager Albert G. Ilg of Management Resources LLC, includes a number of recommendations for the Hartford Police Department. Go to www.hartfordinfo.org and type “police report” in the white search box towards the upper left corner and then click “Search,” or click on “Public Safety & Crime” from the list of categories on the left of the home page.
- Hartford Communities That Care® Youth Survey: This recent survey of students in several schools on the North End of Hartford was designed to identify the levels of risk factors related to problem behaviors such as alcohol, tobacco and other drug use, and to identify the levels of protective factors that help guard against those behaviors. Go to www.hartfordinfo.org and type “youth survey” in the white search box towards the upper left corner and then click “Search,” or click on “Education” from the list of categories on the left of the home page.
- Up Against A Wall: Housing Affordability for Renters: This report from the National Low Income Housing Coalition is based on analysis of the American Community Survey (ACS) by the U.S. Census Bureau (including state and county data for Connecticut). It finds that in 2003 renter incomes did not keep up with housing costs throughout much of the country. - Through an agreement with The Hartford Courant, HartfordInfo.org continues to offer selected Courant articles as permanent additions to the web site. Some recent additions include:
- “Violent Crimes in City Drop 15.6%,” a January 8, 2005 article on the reduction in violent crimes in Hartford for 2004. Go to www.hartfordinfo.org and type “violent crimes” in the white search box towards the upper left corner and then click “Search,” or click on “Public Safety & Crime” from the list of categories on the left of the home page.
- “Hartford Leads Area in Growth of Home Prices,” a November 5, 2004 story about the new survey by the Capitol Region Council of Governments that found that the median housing price in Hartford jumped by 76.5 percent between 1999 and 2004, the largest increase by percentage in the 29-town region. - “Their New World: Refugees of Faraway Wars are Being Resettled Here,” A December 26, 2004 article on the recent influx of refugees from Liberia and Somalia into Hartford.
